ITIN in San Antonio, without mailing your passport.

I’m an IRS Certifying Acceptance Agent. Your passport is verified here in the office and goes home in your pocket the same day, instead of being mailed to the IRS to wait.

What an ITIN is

A number for people the Social Security system doesn’t cover.

An ITIN is the number the IRS gives people who need to file, or be claimed on, a U.S. return but can’t get a Social Security number. Getting one means proving to the IRS who you are.

Most people are told to mail their original passport and wait weeks without it. You don’t have to. As a Certifying Acceptance Agent, I verify the document here, send the IRS a certified copy, and hand the original back.

Why it mattersA passport in the mail is a passport you can’t travel with, show at work, or use as ID. Verifying it here keeps it in your hands.

Questions

What people ask first.

Do I have to mail my original passport to the IRS?

Not when you apply through this office. As a Certifying Acceptance Agent, I verify the passport in person, send the IRS a certified copy, and return the original to you the same day.

Can you renew an ITIN that has expired?

Yes. An ITIN that hasn’t been used on a federal return for three consecutive years expires, and renewals use the same Form W-7. We check whether yours needs it before anything is filed.

Does the W-7 need a tax return?

Usually, yes. The W-7 is filed together with the federal return it’s needed for, unless one of the IRS exceptions applies. We file both together so nothing is sent twice.

How long until the ITIN arrives?

The IRS sets the timing. It’s typically several weeks, and longer during tax season. We tell you when it’s filed and what to watch for in the mail.
